Puerto Rico: The (Maybe Soon-To-Be) 51st State is Calling Your Name

You may have seen Puerto Rico in the news lately, its residents voting on whether or not to become the 51st state of the United States for the fourth time in the island's history.

And while that's probably not happening — historically low voter turnout, wouldn't you know — it's still as great a time as ever to pay a visit to the U.S.'s largest unincorporated territory (by both population and land area).

Why do I say this? Well, I was speaking with a friend recently about where we might go on vacation before the year is out, and he pointed me in the direction of jetBlue's travel deals. I poked around their site a little and ended up checking out the top 10 deals they're currently offering.

Something immediately stuck out: all 10 of the deals were for 4-day/3-night trips to Puerto Rico. Clustered around the capital of San Juan, selections on the list include stays at the Ritz Carlton; El Conquistador, a Waldorf Astoria Resort; and the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort.

The costs shown are per person and cover your flight and hotel. The cheapest on the Puerto Rican-infused list right now is the package for the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, which lists the price per person at $569 (though it should be noted that this deal, like the others, is available for select dates only).

All the deals on the list require flying out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York — jetBlue's HQ, as it were. If that sounds like an issue, you can of course check out their flight and hotel deals from other airports across the U.S. The best price I could find for a mid-July trip flying jetBlue from Detroit to San Juan, for example, came in around $675 per person.
